Greetings from Argentina and the coastal resort town of Mar del Plata, home to a most wonderful film festival, free flowing Malbec and, tonight, two more screenings of About A Son.
I´d known before I got here that Argentina was, as a country, very interested in alternative music, but have been constantly surprised by how that has shown itself during my visit. On the five hour drive from Buenos Aries to Mar del Plata (let no one bitch about the 2 hour sojourn from St. Louis to Columbia for True/False ever again) I heard, on the radio, classic Bowie (Life on Mars), Iggy Pop dueting with Kate Pierson (Candy) and any number of college rock faves from the early 90s that I had long forgotten. Today, having lunch on a sun-warmed deck overlooking the ocean, the piped in music transitioned effortlessly from the Rascal´s Good Lovin´to Patti Smith´s Gloria to the Connells´74-75. Now, that´s some crazy shit, if you ask me.
Meanwhile, when I arrived in town yesterday, I went immediately into a secession of interviews unlike what I´d ever seen before. It seems that every paper in Argentina has a story about the film today and there´s a level of interest in Kurt´s life that I find quite touching.
After our first screening last night - attended, I am told, by a famous Argentinian film actress and her also well-known three-year old son - there was a giant feast at a delicious steakhouse, followed by a night of dancing back at the festival´s beachside headquarters. I shot an in-depth photo essay of last evening (and the progressive more impressionistic and blurred photos) which I will post on my return to Los Angeles. But for now, another night of the most impressive 22nd edition of the Festival Internationale Cine de Mar del Plata.
Caio.
