Nominations were announced Tuesday for the 2005 Gotham Awards, the now-official kick-off of the winter's awards cavalcade. Moved last year to early December (this year, it arrives November 30), the 15th Annual Gothams are presented by IFP, and feature just a handful of awards, including Best Feature and Best Documentary.
You'll have to forgive my confusion as there has been so much going on with IFP and their split with IFP West (now called Film Independent after a brief flirtation with the enigmatic "Find Film"), and the tussle between the Gothams and the Film Independent's Independent Spirit Awards, but didn't the Gothams used to be a celebration of New York filmmaking? Is it still? For the life of me, looking at the nominees, I can't tell if they now have a completely open format or if all you need is one producer or production company or distributor based in NYC to qualify.
