For Oscar docs, I wouldn't rule out EVERY LITTLE STEP; VALENTINO: THE LAST EMPEROR; THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN AMERICA or, still to come, MORE THAN A GAME and GOOD HAIR.

. . . and KASSIM THE DREAM or ANVIL. Both films feel like afterthoughts at this point, but KASSIM is in line with Academy thinking - like CRUDE which will likely shortlist and could upset either THE COVE or FOOD INC for a nom - and ANVIL is much loved, even though "music docs" have a hard time landing a nom, even when the skew more personal - a la DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON.

and does RACING DREAMS have a chance? there seems to be good will from STREET FIGHT, and this film confirms Marshall Curry as a bona fide filmmkaker. Has a director ever had his first two docs nominated?

And how will HBO's Obama doc factor in? It'll air during the shortlisting period which may influence the screening committee.
