9:35 The amazing Sam Pollard is next - "he's got more Emmys than anyone in this room."
9:22 Passing the 1 hr 15 min mark, a man whose name I don't catch or recognize introduces a clip from YOUNG@HEART after acknowledging that none of the creatives from the film are here and then talks about layoffs at Paramount. And then a representative of Fox Searchlight, who ifvyou believe the LA Times is extremely disappointed in Y@H's 4 millionbdollar box officevperformance comes to the stage to accept the award.
9:18 A warm response for scholarship and preservation recipient Marina Goldovskaya. I hope I will live another 30 years and die with a camera.
9:06 About 90% of the audience stands for Herzog. He thanks his longtime editor and says Los Angeles has always been good to him, then tells a crazy story about a roller skating hold up murderer. "This is a real gun and Im really shooting.". Talks about shifting realms of reality. "Not a complete surprise that this award is given to me". - have to move away from the old ways of making documentaries. In my films I have tried to find the ecstacy. "we need to leave the true facts behind."
8:59 Spurlock intros Herzog tribute clips by describing Werner as one of the "great living masters of cinema."
8:40 Ann Magnuson - god, what a voice - presents the pioneer award to Rob Epstein.
8:30 Adrian Grenier presents the audience award to FOOD FIGHT. A collective huh? Arises from the audience.
8:23 Morgan Spurlock drinks from a bottle of "vodka" as he bemoans the box office performance of WHERE IN THE WORLD IS OSAMA BIN LADEN and introducing emerging filmmaker winner Stefan Forbes (BOOGIE MAN), who compares himself to a sea mammal.
8:15 Ira Glass is here to pick up the first award of the night.
8:10 Also in the house - Blessed is the Match director Roberts Grossman, IOUSA director Patrick Creadon, Variety's Anne Thompson, Alphacines Jannat Gargi, the IDA's Tamara Krinsky, publicists David Magdael and Nancy Willen.
8:06 pm. Eddie Schmidt opens the IDA Awards with guitar tribute to Morgan Spurlock - "my close personal facebook friend". The "new" IDA AWards signified by a Spurlock as Obama via Shepard Fairey and as Che Guevara.
7:21 pm. - the drink tonight is a vodka mojito. Served by young folks clad in Werner Herzog t-shirts. Lots of folks milling about including host Morgan Herzog, TROUBLE THE WATER directors Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, filmmakers Amy Berg, Arlene Donnelly, Sundance doc guru Cara Mertes, Cinevegas' Mike Plante, Participant's Bryan Stamp, Mark Urman and many more. Best passed food is the bacon wrapped date with blue cheese.
Tonight, we're going to try an experiment and liveblog from the IDA Awards. I'm excited about this year's awards because Eddie Schmidt, the new Executive Director of the IDA, has made a strong attempt to reinvigorate this important event for the IDA. So, if all goes well, we will be reporting live as the event goes on - and don't be surprised if there's drinks (and subsequent misspellings) involved. Keep checking back throughout the night as we blog.
AJ -- what happened? You left for a drink after Sam Pollard? Nice to see you if not speak to you :) I think all lengthy awards shows should run backwards in this way. It could be a whole new thing.
