Via MCN, the first "official" year end awards have been named and, by tradition, that has fallen to the mysterious and sometimes controversial National Board of Review. Today, they surprised some by naming Clint Eastwood's Letters From Iwo Jima the best picture of the year, leaving off of their top ten list such Oscar favorites as Dreamgirls and The Queen. David Poland has more on why these snubs may not matter much.
In the documentary category, the NBR named Davis Guggenheim's An Inconvenient Truth as the best nonfiction film of the year. It also named 4 runners up to fill out a listing of Top 5: Doug Block's 51 Birch Street, James Longley's Iraq in Fragments, Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck's Shut Up & Sing and Patrick Creadon's Wordplay.
