Just when you thought we couldn't possibly have another Best of 2005 list, here comes our own 3rd Annual Edendale Shortlist. Is this for real? Well, yes, in a way. I poll a bunch of people that I know and love - primarily filmmakers, musicians, actors - and ask them to submit a list of their five favorite films and albums of the past year. This year, the voters numbered more than 40 and they came up with a truly great list of films and records.
The Shortlist Nominees for Film are:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
The Constant Gardener
Good Night, and Good Luck
Grizzly Man
The Squid and the Whale
The Shortlist Nominees for Music are:
Anthony and the Johnsons - I am a Bird Now
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
Iron and Wine with Calexico - In the Reins
M83 - Before the Dawn Heals Us
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Previous shortlist winners in the film category were City of God and Lost in Translation (tie) in 2003 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004. On the music side, past winners were Outkast's Speakerboxx/The Love Below in 2003 and Elliot Smith's From a Basement on the Hill in 2004.
Winners will be announced on March 5.
What are your choices?
I Am A Bird Now is just about my favorite album of this year AND last year. I've had to force myself to stop listening to it and save it for special occasions.

Can you know and love me enough in time for next year's nominations?
