Sarah Jo Marks (who's got a great docu blog called Documentary Insider) has the low-down on the WGA Award Ceremony for Non-ficiton Films, held last night at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt.
As she and Reuters report, the prize (in its second year) went to Alex Gibney for Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. (Last year's winner was Morgan Spurlock for Super Size Me).
I wish that someone could explain to me this prize. As I understand it, documentaries are eligible even if there is no "script" per se, the idea being that the editor is, in this case, one of the "writers" because they are taking the footage and "scripting" it into a final film. While I agree with that and love to see all of the guilds recognize nonfiction filmmaking, I'm still a bit baffled by the quidelines here. I asked around when I was in Park City and my doc pals were equally confused by the prize, but also thought it's a great idea. So if anyone can enlighten us, I think we'd be grateful...
