Michael Moore can rest easy.
He will remain the filmmaker with the biggest nonfiction title of all time8 - at least for now.
Jeff Tremaine's JACKASS 3D closed out the Thanksgiving weekend with an estimated $190K. And while that's a weekend gross that most docmakers would rejoice at, it's a significant drop (in dollars and in screen numbers) from the film's previous weekend take of $737K. It's total cume is now $116.5M.
That means that in all likelihood the third film in the JACKASS series will top out a couple million shy of Moore's 2004 blockbuster FAHRENHEIT 9/11, which ended its run with $119M.
While it won't wear the overall box office crown, JACKASS 3D can still boast a number of box office records - the biggest nonfiction opening weekend ever, three of the top four individual days at the nonfiction box office, 19 consecutive days with $1M+ take.
And Charles Ferguson's INSIDE JOB added another $311K (estimated) to its total, bringing it to $2.6M. That makes it the 8th highest grossing nonfiction of 2010 - and third highest on the Academy shortlist (behind SUPERMAN and Banksy's EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP).
