James Marsh's MAN ON WIRE and Ari Forman's WALTZ WITH BASHIR continued their march to the Kodak Theatre by picking up the British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary and Best Foreign Film (h/t Sasha Stone).
While MAN ON WIRE is the early frontrunner for the Feature Documentary Oscar, BASHIR was not eligible in that category - although it is eligible for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Animated Film. A nod in either category would mark a first for a nonfiction title. Just two years ago, Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up" from AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH received the first Oscar for a documentary film outside the traditional documentary cateogries. HOOP DREAMS' editing team was nominated but did not win in 1994, the year of that films' notorious exclusion by the documentary screening committee.
MAN ON WIRE and WALTZ WITH BASHIR will both vie for the International Documentary Association's Best Documentary prize this Friday at a ceremony in Los Angeles.
I'm really intrigued with Man on Wire- I'm set to get a hold of it as soon as it comes out on DVD...
