A brief note from New York City, where I landed today after three pretty great days in Rome. (I will finish my Rome reporting in the days to come.) David Poland links to the announcement of this year's IDA (Independent Documentary Association) Award Nominees, and like last year when the biggest doc of the year - March of the Penguins - was left out of the running for Best Documentary, Davis Guggenheim's An Inconvenient Truth was not listed amongst the ten films up for this year's top prize. The Al Gore global warming pic, like film festival favorite and Oscar hopeful The Trials of Darryl Hunt, were nominated in other categories, again just like last year's Penguins juggernaut.
Amongst those making the cut were Amy Berg's Deliver Us From Evil, James Longley's Iraq in Fragments, Zach Niles and Banker White's Refugee All Stars, Lauren Greenfield's Thin and Frank Popper's Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?
A full list of nominees can be found here. The ten films nominated for Best Documentary of the Year can be found below. I will follow this up with links and more information once I get back to Los Angeles.
